Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
International Design Competition Washington DC

This class will use a variety of techniques integrating digital media into the design process to propose a memorial to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The competition challenges entrants to design a "living memorial" encompassing Dr. King's spirituality, his leadership, and his personal sacrifice in the movement for social justice and his message of hope for all humanity. Sited on the Mall of Washington DC, the Memorial is to be inspired by three major themes: the man, the movement, the message. Collectively, these three themes are to provide guidance and illumination for the competition design.

Students in the class will examine the role of the monument at the end of the twentieth century, and within the context of Dr. King's legacy will propose a monument fitting both his place in history and as a representation of his role in today's society. Students will be expected to research both the history of Dr. King's life and work, and the history of monument design to inform their design work. A field trip to visit the memorial site in Washington DC will take place in September. Entrants for the competition must be registered by October 15th, and the submission is due December 1st.

This class is open to any student who has taken 4.183/4,181 Digitally Mediated Design I, or 4.200/4.201 Computational Design I, or 4.223/4.226 Computational Design II, or 4.207 Formal Design Knowledge and Programmed Constructs. It is also open to groups of students of whom ONE has taken 4.183/4,181 Digitally Mediated Design I.

This competition, organised by The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. has a first prize of $20,000.
